Background: THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT, UNDER THE COLOMBO PLAN, GAVE TWO PROVINCES IN SOUTHERN LAOS, TRANSISTOR RADIOS AND TEACHING APPARATUS WORTH THOUSANDS OF POUNDS.

THE TEACHING APPARATUS CONSIST OF; 9,400 SCHOOL BOOKS, 200 DRAWING BOOKS, 340 DOZENS PENCILS, 12 CASES OF WHITE CHALK AND NUMEROUS OTHER SUPPLIES.

MR. GEOFFREY PRICE, CHARGE D'AFFAIRES OF THE AUSTRALIAN EMBASSY IN LAOS, HANDED THE GIFTS TO THE CHIEFS OF THE ATTOPEU AND CHAMPASAK PROVINCES ON BEHALF OF HIS GOVERNMENT.

AT THE ATTOPEU AIRSTRIP, THE PROVINCE CHIEF, MR. KHAM LEUANE AND SEVERAL OTHER GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS WELCOMED MR. PRICE. AT THE END OF THE CEREMONY, THE AUSTRALIAN OFFICIALS BOARDED A ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIRFORCE PLANE FOR CHAMPASAK PROVINCE TO MAKE A SIMILAR GIFT.

AS THE PROVINCE HAS NO AIRSTRIP, THE AUSTRALIAN OFFICIALS HAD TO FERRY ACROSS THE MEKONG RIVER IN A MOTOR LAUNCH. THEY WERE WELCOMED BY THE PROVINCE CHIEF, MR. BOU, OTHER OFFICIALS AND SCORES OF FLOWER-CARRYING LAOTIAN GIRLS.

THE PRINCE OF CHAMPASAK PROVINCE IS PRINCE BOUN OUM, RIGHTWING LEADER AND FORMER LAOTIAN PREMIER. HE RENOUNCED HIS RIGHT TO THE KINGDOM OF CHAMPASAK, WHICH ENABLED THE UNIFICATION OF THE THREE KINGDOMS UNDER THE PRESENT KING OF LAOS. HOWEVER, HE STILL RETAINS THE HONOURARY TITLE OF PRINCE OF CHAMPASAK.
