  • Description

Jo Siffert of Switzerland twice smashed the lap record in the first practice session for the Le Mans 24 Hours motor race on Saturday (17 April).

Siffert flew in form Barcelona, where he was practising for the Spanish Grand Prix, for the session. He drove a Porsche in both of his record-breading attempts. Out of a field of 37 cars entered in the race -- to be held on June 24 -- 24 are Porsches. Last Year they entered 22 out of a total of 55 cars.

Some 30 cars turned out for Saturday's practice and one of the most noted times was set up by a three litre prototype, the French Ligier JS3, having its first outing. Driven by its builder, Guy Ligier, the new car averaged around 135 mph, comparable with the times set by the French Matras which are among the fastest three litre cars.
