The first visit to the Vatican by a reigning British Sovereign in 38 years... Queen Elizabeth of England and the Duke had a private audience with Pope John, May 5. They talked together for nearly half-an-hour.
They were received in the Vatican with all the pomp and ceremony due to a Head of State. Escorted by soldiers of the Swiss guard, Papal ushers and throne bearers, they walked in procession to the Pope's private apartments.
Cameras caught a brief glimpse through the door of Pope John welcoming his Royal guests, before they went his library for their private meeting.
Members of the Queen's suite waited in the Hall of the Nobel Guard while behind closed doors Pope John and his guests talked - in French for twenty-five minutes.
The Queen - in black, her mantilla held by a diamond tiara - wore the blue sash of the Carter.
Later, the Queen and Duke left Rome for a four-day sightseeing tour of in Italy.
