Background: THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE HAS PURCHASED TWELVE OF THE MOST MODERN VERSIONS OF THE LOCKHEED C-130 HERCULES, THE H MODEL. THE AIRLIFTERS ARE NOW IN PRODUCTION AT LOCKHEED'S MARIETTA, GA. FACILITY.

THE H MODELS WILL BE USED AS TACTICAL AIRLIFTERS AND WILL REPLACE EARLIER MODELS WHICH HAVE BEEN IN OPERATION FOR THE PAST TWENTY YEARS.

THE CENTER SECTION FOR THE FIRST NEW RAAF HERCULES IS NOW IN FINAL ASSEMBLY. IT WAS MOVED FROM ITS JIGGING BY A TWELVE-TON-CAPACITY CRANE AND WAS TAKEN SOME TWO THOUSAND FEET ACROSS ONE OF THE LARGEST AIRCRAFT MANUFACTURING FLOORS IN THE WORLD.

FIRST DELIVERIES OF THE NEW H MODEL AIRLIFTERS WILL BE NEXT JULY. THE AUSTRALIAN AIRLIFTERS WILL BE DELIVERED AT A RATE OF ABOUT THREE A MONTH THOUGH OCTOBER.

THE RAAF PRESENTLY OPERATES TWENTY-FOUR OF THE VERSATILE C-130 HERCULES AIRLIFTERS.

THE AUSSIES HAVE ACHIEVED AN OUTSTANDING SAFETY RECORD WITH WELL OVER 125,000 ACCIDENT-FREE HOURS OF OPERATION ON BOTH THEIR SQUADRON OF TWELVE "A" MODEL HERCULES ACQUIRED TWENTY YEARS AGO AND AN EQUAL AMOUNT -- 125,000 HOURS -- ONE THEIR FLEET OF "E" MODELS ACQUIRED TEN YEARS AGO.

WITH DELIVERIES OF THE AIRLIFTERS, AUSTRALIA WILL HAVE ONE OF THE LARGER HERCULES FLEETS OF 43 NATIONS CURRENTLY OPERATING SOME 1500 LOCKHEED C-130s WORLDWIDE.
