"Sources ended his five years in exile with a haro's welcome at Lisbon's main railway station. Armed troops and police, although present in case the crowds got out of hand, stayed very much in the background when the socialist leader appeared. Sources was exiled to France by the deposed Dr. Castano in 1969. It's apparent by his rapid and very popular return that he hopes to play a key role in shaping the democratic future of Portugal. But it's on Africa that he, like so many of the former opposition leaders, are outspoken. It's the issue of Portugal's African colonies that could prove to be the Junta's first stumbling block. General Spinola has made it quite clear that he favours (and intends to follow) the policy of progressive autonomy with independence at a much later date. Sources and the other political leaders have made it quite clear that they want independence now for Africa. How General Spinola intends to reconcile these differences remains to be seen."

Background: In Portugal, the first tentative steps forward free elections promised by General Antonio De Spinola has come with the release from prison of political prisoners and the return from exile of Socialist leader Mario Soruces, With the return of calm, stranded foreign tourists and businessmen began leaving when the Junta ordered airport re-opened.

However, despite the release of prisoners, General Spinola cautioned that any attempt to exploit popular feeling at the end of more than 40 years of dictatorial rule would be quashed.

At a briefing for Portuguese newspaper editors of the liberal opposition, General Spinola warned that force would be sued if necessary to keep order for the time being. At the briefing, the Portuguese leader said that if Portugal's African territories opted for his federal-type solution to their problems it would be a triumph for them and for Portugal.

Portuguese socialist leader, Mario Sources, ended his five years of exile the day after the briefing when he was given a hero's welcome at Lisbon's main railway station.

The night before Mr. Soruces' arrival in Lisbon, thousands of people -- many of them left-wingers who have had no legal political expression in Portugal -- marched through the streets of the city. the offices of the newspaper Epoca, the mouthpiece of the former Government, were sacked. Others smashed bank and office windows and attacked people suspected of being members of the now-disbanded political police. A rash of armed robberies and other violence was also reported.
