  • Description

THE VENICE FILM FESTIVAL IS ON AND THE ITALIAN CITY IS CROWDED WITH THE INTERNATIONAL HIGH SOCIETY OF THE CINEMA AS WELL AS POTENTIAL STARS ATTRACTED BY THE PUBLICITY AND CONTROVERSY WHICH THE FESTIVAL ALWAYS AROUSES.

THE FESTIVAL STARTED LAST SUNDAY AND HAS ALREADY ATTRACTED THE CRITICISM OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC PATRIARCH OF VENICE, CARDINAL GIOVANNI URBANI. HE SAID YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THAT THE FILMS BEING SHOWN DISPLAYED MORAL MISERY AND WERE IN OPEN CONTRAST TO CHRISTIAN MORALITY.

THE FESTIVAL LASTS TWO WEEKS. NINE COUNTRIES HAVE SUBMITTED A TOTAL OF 14 FILMS IN COMPETITION FOR THE COVETED PRIZE, THE "GOLDEN LION OF SAINT MARK".

THE FIRST FILM SCREENED WAS A UNITED STATES PRODUCTION, "THE WILD ANGELS", STARRING PETER FONDA AND NANCY SINATRA IN A RAW EXPOSE OF CALIFORNIAN MOTORCYCLE GANGS. IT WAS DIRECTED BY ROGER CORMAN, AND INCLUDED SCENES OF A NEAR ORGY AT A FUNERAL SERVICE AND THE ATTEMPTED RAPE OF A NURSE.

THE FILM WAS NOT VERY WELL RECEIVED BY AUDIENCE OR CRITICS, AND THE OTHER UNITED STATES ENTRY, "CHAPPAQUA", WAS NOT MUCH BETTER, ACCORDING TO SOME CRITICS. THE DIRECTOR OF ":CHAPPAQUA", CONRAD ROOKS, SAID THAT THE FILM WAS LARGELY AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL. IT DEALT WITH A POET'S SEARCH FOR INSPIRATION IN DRUGS.

BY FAR THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL FILM SO FAR WAS THE SWEDISH FILM "NATT LEK" (NIGHT GAMES). THIS WAS SHOWN YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) AT A PRIVATE VIEWING FOR THE PRESS AND JURY - THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED WITH THE FILM COMPETING IN THE VENICE FESTIVAL.
