  • Description

President of Leopoldville Province, Cleophas Kamitatu called a press conference in Leopoldville Nov 9 to parade six anti-Lumumba agents before the Press, then revealed subversive documents supposed to have been carried by them.

But the following night, Nov 10, Kamitatu became himself a prisoner - arrested by troops of Congolese leader Joseph Mobutu in a lightning swoop on his Leopoldville home. Congolese police guarding it made no attempt to resist the troops.

    M. Kamitatu, one of the most outspoken antagonists of Col. Mobutu and an influential supporter of ex-Premier Patrice Lumumba, said at his press conference the Lumumba Government was the Congo's only legal one and warned the Congo would become a second Algeria if the U.N. continued to ignore the "parliamentary majority" of Lumumba.
