    Cannes Film Festival prizes for the best acting roles were awarded to Sophia Loren of Italy and Tony Perkins of the United States, May 18. The awards were presented by French stars Danielle Darrieux and Jean Marais.

    Miss Loren was honoured for her role in the Vittorio de Sica film "La Ciociara" (The Shepherdess). Perkins won the award for his role in "Goodbye Again", the screen adaptation of the Francoise Sagan novel "Aimez-vous Brahms".

    The Golden Palm for the best film was shared by the French "Une Aussi Longue Absence" and the Spanish "Viridiana". Russia took the prize for the best direction with the entry "Story of the Mad Years".

    In tribune to the late Gary Cooper, the jury created a special prize for the film with the greatest social and human significance. It was awarded to the American film "A Raisin in the Sun".
