President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia today (Sunday) announced purges in the country's armed forces and police. Only two days ago the President was given a GBP1,000 silver baton as a birthday present by members of the Third Battalion, Zambia Regiment.
Today President Kaunda told a rally in Lusaka that he had made the purges because of the "double dealing" of certain people.
He gave no details, and said the investigation were still going on.
Friday was the President's 43rd birthday, and he was the guest of the Army at Chindwin Barracks, near Broken Hill.
He was welcomed to the barracks by Major-General Grigg, Commander of the Zambian Army.
The baton, in solid silver, was presented to the President before he inspected a march past of troops.
Lieutenant-Colonel Dowling, commanding officer of the Battalion, led President Kaunda on the tour of inspection.
