  • Description

A Swiss rider, Albert Zweifel, has taken first place in one of the world's toughest cycling events ... the World Professional Cyclo-Cross competition.

Cyclo-Cross is a sport suited only for the fittest of cyclists as it involves racing across country in all kinds of weather conditions.

This year's World Professional race was held at Chazay d'Azergues, near Lyons, in France. Recent heavy rains turned the track into a veritable quagmire through which the riders had to carry their bikes up every incline.

After only a few yards, all bikes were covered in inches of the heavy, sticky, black mud that made up the course.

The heavy conditions took their toll on both men and machines. The rules allow the riders to change bikes during the course of the race but the clean bikes the riders picked up were soon as heavy and unwieldily as their former used machines.

Zweifel showed he was a professional in every sense of the word as he took complete command of the race after the first three miles of the fifteen mile course.

British riders showed that they needed much more preparation if they were ever to reach the standard of the Swiss champion. British rider Jeff Morris was fortunate not to be disqualified for running without carrying his machine in the early stages of the race.
