  • Description

The rift in Franco-German relations caused by different monetary policies topped the agenda when West German Chancellor, Herr Willy Brandt, flew to Paris today (Friday) for a summit meeting with French President Georges Pompidou. Herr Brandt's arrival was preceded by the announcement of new French measures to halt speculation about a revaluation of the franc. When they met, the two leaders set aside Common Market issues and East-West relations to concentrate on the financial dispute. It resulted from the French two-tier foreign exchange system, pegging the franc to the old dollar parity. The West Germans are opposed to this system and have allowed the mark to float.
