  • Description

A two-hour long military parade reviewed by President Fuad Chehab marked Lebanon's sixteenth independence day celebrations in Beirut, Nov. 22.

Watching the parade were government ministers including Premier Karami; members of the Diplomatic Corps, including a Papal representative; and Lebanon's Army commanders, including C-in-C General Adel Chehab.

Many troops carried paper lanterns instead of guns - this was primarily a peaceful celebration and one of rejoicing to judge by the President's message to the country that Lebanon was on the road to a new life because of "the disappearance of the spirit of discord and hatred, the desire to set aside anything that might encourage internal divisions, and a willingness to make unceasing efforts to build the State and society on the foundations of morality, justice, equality and duty."
