KARL SCHRANZ, 1962 WORLD SKIING CHAMPION AND AUSTRIAN WINTER OLYMPICS HOPE, TODAY, (SUNDAY), WON THE INTERNATIONAL DOWNHILL COMPETITION AT THE ANNUAL "THREE THREE" MEETING AT MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO, IN THE ITALIAN ALPS.

A PREVIOUS VICTOR IN THE "THREE THREE" IN 1959, SCHRANZ DEFEATED MOST OF HIS OLYMPIC RIVALS ALTHOUGH HE FINISHED ONLY THIRD IN EACH OF THE TWO RACES WHICH MADE UP THE DOWNHILL EVENT. THE FIRST, HELD YESTERDAY, (SATURDAY), WAS WON BY WILLI BOGNER OF WEST GERMANY.

TODAY'S RACE WAS WON BY WOLFGANG BARTELS OF WEST GERMANY, WITH EGON ZIMMERMANN OF AUSTRIA SECOND. A LACK OF SNOW IN AUSTRIA, HOST NATION FOR THE WINTER OLYMPICS AT THE END OF THIS MONTH, BROUGHT MANY TOP LINE SKIIERS TO MADONNA FOR THE EVENT AND SOME FINAL PRE-OLYMPIC COMPETITION.

UNLIKE PREVIOUS YEARS, THE SLALOM EVENT IN THIS YEAR'S THREE THREE WAS CANCELLED.
