  • Description

FRANCE IS WAITING FOR GENERAL DE GAULLE'S ANSWER TO YESTERDAY'S CHALLENGE HANDED TO HIM BY THE VOTERS IN THE UNPRECEDENTED PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. THE 75-YEAR-OLD PRESIDENT, WHO FAILED TO WIN THE REQUIRED OVERALL MAJORITY IN THE FIRST BALLOT, FACES TWO ALTERNATIVES: RETIREMENT OR ENTRY INTO THE ARENA FOR A SECOND CONTEST AGAINST THE LEFT-WINGER FRANCOIS MITTERRAND.

THERE HAS BEEN NO ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE PRESIDENT BUT IT IS GENERALLY EXPECTED THAT HE WILL ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE, STAND AGAIN AND BEAT M. MITTERRAND HANDSOMELY.

NEVERTHELESS PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S FAILURE TO WIN THE OUTRIGHT VICTORY IS LIKELY TO HAVE IMMEDIATE REPERCUSSIONS. IN PARTICULAR IT'S EXPECTED THAT INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND NEGOTIATIONS INVOLVING FRANCE WILL BE HELD UP. FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTER, M. COUVE DE MURVILLE PLANNED TO MEET HIS ITALIAN COUNTERPART IN ROME THIS WEEK FOR TALKS ON THE COMMON MARKET. THEY WERE TO FIX A DATE FOR THE SIX COMMON MARKET FOREIGN MINISTERS TO MEET TO CONSIDER WAYS OF ENDING THE CRISIS WHICH HAS STALLED THE MARKET SINCE LAST JUNE. NOW THIS MEETING MAY BE POSTPONED UNTIL AFTER THE FRENCH PRESIDENTIAL ISSUE HAS BEEN DECIDED.

GENERAL DE GAULLE IS NOT EXPECTED BACK IN PARIS FROM HIS COUNTRY HOME UNTIL TOMORROW, AND IT'S THOUGHT THAT HE MAY WAIT UNTIL THEN BEFORE ANNOUNCING HIS DECISION. BUT PRIME MINISTER POMPIDOU GAVE A BROAD HINT THAT HIS LEADER WILL FIGHT AGAIN: "THE DIVERSIONIST CANDIDATES HAVE SUCCEEDED IN PUTTING OFF THE BIG MANIFESTATION OF THE NATIONAL WILL, AND HAVE THUS DONE A DISSERVICE TO THEIR COUNTRY WHICH HAS NO DOUBT REALISED THIS".

A RECORD 85 PER CENT OF VOTERS WENT TO THE POLLS. WITH RESULTS FROM FRENCH OVERSEAS TERRITORIES STILL TO BE OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED - PROVISIONAL RETURNS SHOW AN OVERWHELMING VOTE IN FAVOUR OF PRESIDENT DE GAULLE - THE PRESIDENT HAS POLLED 43.96 PER CENT. HIS CLOSEST RIVAL M. MITTERRAND HAS 32.04 PER CENT. THE SECOND BALLOT IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE IN 19TH DECEMBER.
