    THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CARRIER, H.M.S. ARK ROYAL, WARNED OFF A 900-TON SOVIET TUG IN THE NORTH SEA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) BEFORE AIRCRAFT FROM THE CARRIER GAVE A SPECTACULAR BOMBING AND STRAFING DISPLAY FOR QUEEN ELIZABETH, THE QUEEN MOTHER. THE TUG HAD BEEN SHADOWING THE CARRIER SINCE MONDAY NIGHT. AFTER THE DISPLAY IT CLOSED IN AGAIN.

    THE QUEEN MOTHER ARRIVED ON THE CARRIER BY HELICOPTER AND WAS WELCOMED BY THE CAPTAIN. THE DISPLAY TOOK PLACE ABOUT 22 MILES EAST OF GIRDLENESS, ABERDEENSHIRE.

    BEFORE IT STARTED THE ARK ROYAL SENT A MESSAGE WARNING THE TUG TO KEEP AT LEAST FOUR MILES AWAY, BECAUSE AIRCRAFT WOULD BE FIRING LIVE AMMUNITION. THE TUG MOVED EIGHT MILES ASTERN OF THE CARRIER UNTIL THE DISPLAY WAS OVER.

    THE QUEEN MOTHER WAS SHOWN SCIMITAR AND VIXEN AIRCRAFT DROPPING 500 POUND BOMBS, AND FIRING PROJECTILES AND 30 MILLIMETRE CANNON. BEFORE LEAVING, SHE TALKED TO SOME OF THE PILOTS AND THE SHIP'S OFFICERS.
