    SIX PEOPLE WERE INJURED WHEN OPPOSING GROUPS OF STUDENTS FOUGHT A PITCHED BATTLE AS MRS INDIRA GANDHI, PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA, ARRIVED IN CALCUTTA YESTERDAY (FRIDAY).

    THE OPPOSING GROUPS OF STUDENTS WERE CONGRESS PARTY SUPPORTERS AND SOCIALISTS. BECAUSE OF THE DEMONSTRATION MRS GANDHI WAS FORCED TO CHANGE HER ROUTE AWAY FROM DUM DUN AIRPORT.

    THERE WAS A MORE PEACEFUL WELCOME FROM SEVERAL THOUSAND PEOPLE WHO TURNED OUT TO GREET MRS GANDHI AT THE AIRPORT. AS THE STUDENT BATTLE RAGED OUTSIDE THE WELCOMERS GARLANDED THE PRIME MINISTER WITH FLOWERS.

    IT WAS HER FIRST VISIT TO CALCUTTA, THE CAPITAL OF WEST BENGAL, SINCE THE FORMATION OF A COMMUNIST-DOMINATED GOVERNMENT IN THE STATE IN FEBRUARY.

    AFTER LEAVING THE AIRPORT MRS GANDHI SPOKE WITH THE SLUM-DWELLERS. THROUGH THE TOUR THE 51-YEAR-OLD PREMIER AIMS TO BUILD UP HER IMAGE AS A POPULAR LEADER AND STRESS HER NEW SOCIALIST ECONOMIC POLICIES WHICH WAS HERALDED BY THE NATIONALISATION OF MAJOR INDIAN BANKS.
