Background: At the United Nations on Friday (15 November), Jordan's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zuhayr Al-Mufti, said his country welcomed the participation of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) in the debate on Palestine.

The Jordanian Minister -- speaking on the third day of the debate -- said his country welcomed PLO's leadership in the struggle to re-establish the national rights of the Palestine people....on their national soil in Palestine.

Said Al-Mufti said his country hoped that the PLO would be successful and it recognised the immensity of the burden ... a substantial segment of which had been shouldered by Jordan for two decades.

He said any just and permanent solution to the Palestine question must include the right of the people of Palestine who had been forcibly expelled from their homes.

The right to self-determination and national independence, he added, was another basic principle.

Said Al-Mufti concluded by saying the United Nations, where Palestinian tragedy was born, should fittingly draw up a just, human and lasting solution.
