  • Description

A rally held in support of the British Minster for Overseas Development, Mr. Rag Prentice, was completely disrupted by angry, chanting demonstrators on Thursday night (11 September).

Mr. Prentice was dropped by his local Labour Party constituency in Newham, north east London on the night of 23 July. The local branch decided not to nominate his as their representative in nest British general elections.

Since then senior Labour politicians have been attempting to have Mr. Prentice reinstated by his local branch of the party.

At the meeting last night the Home Secretary, Mr. Roy Jenkins and the Prices Secretary, Mrs. Shiley Williams, attempted to speak to a packed crowd at the Newham Town Hall in support of Mr. Prentice.

However, as the meeting began demonstrators in the crowd began chanting "Prentice out, socialism in" and shouts of "shut up" could be heard as mrs. Williams attempted to speak above the growing din.

After the meeting had gone on for several minutes, Mr. Jenkins was reduced to screaming into the microphone as he appealed for the audience to be calm. But the chanting continued and as scuffles broke out between the demonstrators and supporters of Mr. Prentice flour bombs and bags full of coal dust were thrown at the stage, splattering over the official guests.

As the flour bombs hit the stage a Post Office Union leader Mr. Tom Jackson grabbed the microphone and shouted, "That was the National Front, that was the National Front."
The National Front is a British right wing organisation.

Police attempted to intervene to restore order but Mr. Jenkins told them not to interfere.
