Background: HANOVER IS THE FOCUS OF TRADE AND INDUSTRIAL INTEREST IN WEST GERMANY AT THE MOMENT. THE HANOVER AIR SHOW AND EXHIBITION OPENED ON FRIDAY, AND TODAY (SUNDAY), FEDERAL CHANCELLOR ERHARD OPENED THE 1964 HANOVER FAIR.

THE FAIR, OPEN UNTIL 5TH MAY, IS THE 18TH -- AND THE LARGEST SO FAR ORGANIZED. THERE ARE MORE THAN 5,000 EXHIBITORS, OF WHICH OVER 1,3000 ARE FOREIGN FIRMS -- A FACT UNDERLINING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FAIR AS A WORLD-WIDE MARKET AND SHOWPLACE FOR LATEST TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS, BOTH IN THE CAPITAL AND CONSUMER GOODS FIELDS. IN ALL 28 COUNTRIES ARE TAKING PART, OF WHICH EIRE AND BULGARIA ARE COMPLETE NEWCOMERS, AND FRANCE THE BIGGEST FOREIGN EXHIBITOR.

FILMED HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE EXHIBITION COVER EXHIBITS AND CONTRIBUTIONS FROM FRANCE, U.S.A., HUNGARY, BULGARIA, DENMARK AND CANADA. IN THE CAPITAL GOODS SECTION THE ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING INDUSTRIES TAKE UP MOST SPACE, CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY OFFICE EQUIPMENT AND TOOL MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES. THE CONSUMER GOODS EXHIBITS OCCUPY ABOUT 40 PER CENT OF THE COVERED SPACE.

(IN THE OPENING SPEECH CHANCELLOR ERHARD SAID HE BELIEVED IT WAS WRONG TO PUT A CHECK ON THE GERMAN ECONOMY BY PLACING OBSTACLES IN THE WAY OF HER EXPORTS. "WE ARE NOT CONSIDERING ARTIFICIAL MEASURES OR A NEW REVALUATION OF THE DEUTSCHMARK". HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT HE WAS OPPOSED TO GIVING CONSTANT HELP TO COUNTRIES WHOSE BALANCE OF PAYMENTS WERE NEGATIVE.)
