    ONLY AN APPEAL FOR CLEMENCY TO THE NEW VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT CAN SAVE THE 53-YEAR-OLD FORMER OVERLORD OF CENTRAL VIETNAM, CONVICTED ON CHARGES OF MURDER, EXTORTION AND MISUSE OF POWER DURING A SIX-DAY TRIAL. HE DENIED ALL THE CHARGES.

    A DIABETIC, CAN ALSO SUFFERED A HEART ATTACK DURING THE TRIAL, AND SAT SLUMPED IN HIS CHAIR THROUGHOUT THE PROCEEDINGS, AND SHOWED NO EMOTION AT THE VERDICT. HE WAS CARRIED IN AND OUT OF COURT ON A STRETCHER.

    THE TRIBUNAL ALSO CONFISCATED ALL THE PRISONER'S CASH AND PROPERTY - A MOVE TO ELIMINATE THE LAST TRACES OF THE POWER OF THE DIEM FAMILY WHICH HAS DOMINATED SOUTH VIETNAM'S POLITICS FOR A DECADE. NGO DINH CAN SOUGHT REFUGE AT THE UNITED STATES CONSULATE IN HUE AFTER THE NOVEMBER COUP LAST YEAR WHICH OUSTED THE DIEM FAMILY, BUT THE AMERICANS TURNED HIM OVER TO THE REVOLUTIONARY AUTHORITIES.
