  • Description

The Zimbabwe Rhodesia Rhodesian peace talks entered a crucial phase on Thursday (8 November) with the intervention of Zambian President kenneth Kaunda--while the British Parliament urgently debating legislation needed to settle the independence dispute. British officials insisted a settlement was close, but the Patriotic Front guerrillas at the conference disagreed.

SYNOPSIS: Dr. Kaunda arrived at Number Ten Downing street after a private discussion with Lord Carrington on the way from the airport. Prime Minister , Margaret Thatcher and the British delegation at the Lancaster House talks clearly hoped that Dr. Kaunda would help persuade the Patriotic Front to come to term.

The House of Commons, meanwhile, began a marathon sitting to rush a bill to enable the British government to bring Zimbabwe Rhodesia back into colonial legality. Some opposition politicians voiced fears that the bull could be used by the government to hand power to Zimbabwe Rhodesia's Premier, Bishop Abel Muzorewa, and move the country to legal independence without guerrilla participation. Dr. Kaunda is also expected to talk to Patriotic Front delegates during his stay.
