  • Description

A YOUNG WEST BERLIN COUPLE, GERHARD AND ELISABETH BUTH, RECENTLY WERE IMPRISONED ON CHARGES OF HAVING SPIED FOR THE EAST GERMAN STATE SECURITY SERVICE. WHAT MADE THEIR CASE UNUSUAL WAS THE OFFICIAL DISCLOSURE OF THE EQUIPMENT THEY HAD USED IN TRANSMITTING INFORMATION -- A TRANSCEIVER DISGUISED AS A CAMERA AND OPERATING ON AN INFRA-RED BEAM.

THEIR EQUIPMENT -- THE FIRST OF ITS KIND TO BE FOUND IN USE BY AN EAST GERMAN AGENT -- WAS BASED ON AN ORDINARY CAMERA WITH A TELEPHOTO LENS. TO THIS WAS ATTACHED A TRANSMITTER-RECEIVER OPERATING ON AN INFRA-RED BEAM, USING THE TELEPHOTO LENS AS A BEAMING DEVICE.

WORKING FROM A FLAT OVERLOOKING THE BERLIN WALL, THE BUTHS WERE ABLE TO TRANSMIT MESSAGES SOME 700 YARDS (637 METRES) ACROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE -- FREELY, MONITOR-PROOF, AND BECAUSE OF THE CAMERA "COVER", WITHOUT EVEN ATTRACTING ATTENTION. THE FLAT ITSELF WAS IN THE NEIGHBOURING OF A BIG UNITED STATES MILITARY INSTALLATION.

THEIR SYSTEM WAS ONLY DISCOVERED AFTER COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE AGENTS IN WEST BERLIN FOUND GERHARD BUTH NOTING CAR LICENCE NUMBERS ON VEHICLES OUTSIDE A BUILDING HOUSING SECURITY SERVICES. TAKEN FOR QUESTIONING HIS NOTEBOOK REVEALED A CODED TELEPHONE NUMBER: DECIPHERED, IT WAS THAT OF THE EAST BERLIN MINISTRY FOR STATE SECURITY.
