  • Description

Doctor Louis, Neel, the French scientist has been awarded the Nobel Physics Prize jointly with Sweden's Hannes Alfven. Another French-born scientist, Luis Leloir, now a naturalised citizen of Argentina, was awarded the Nobel Chemistry Prize. The awards announced on Tuesday (October 27) in Stockholm.

Dr. Neel told reporters in Paris on wednesday (October 28) that the award to him was a happy event for French Physics.

"I am very happy for French Physics, and in particular for those who study magnetism in France, "he said. "Magnetism is a specialist study which was always been highly developed in France, with Curie, Pierre Weisse, Langevin."
He said the new categories of Magnetism had been extremely interesting, particularly in their application to high frequency and radio and television.

Dr. Neel added: "Nevertheless the Nobel Prize was the last thing I expected."
Dr. Nell and Sweden's Hannes Alfven were honoured by the Royal Academy of Sciences for "Fundamental work and discoveries concerning antiferromagnetism and ferromagnetism which have led to important application in solid state physics."
In Buenos Aires Dr. Luis Leloir, the 64-year-old scientist told reporters at a press conference following the announcement of his Nobel Prize that he was very honoured.

The Paris born Professor said he would continue his research work at his Biochemical Research Institute in the city's northern Belgrano district.

On hearing of his 32,000 sterling award, the Professor said: "Of course I'm honoured at having been awarded the prize, but I hope they haven't made a mistake."
Dr. Leloir is Argentina's third Nobel Prize winner.

In stockholm the Royal Academy said his discoveries had led to clarification of all the syntheses of compounds belonging to the carbohydrate group. It added: "Few discoveries have made such an impact on biochemical research as those of Leloir."
