Twenty-two delegations from socialist and left-wing parties met in Beirut on Monday (November 27) at the start of a three-day conference. The conference was convened by Arab parties and organisations, and its stated aim is to set up a front to participate in "the Palestinian Arab people's struggle". SYNOPSIS: Twenty-two delegations from socialist and left-wing organisations met in Beirut on Monday for a three-day conference. Their stated aim was to set up a front of progressive parties, groups and personalities to participate in what they called the Palestinian Arab people's struggle.

But at least two Arab countries weren't officially represented. The Sudan government didn't send a delegation because the Sudanese Communist Party was taking part, and Libya was not there because it feels the congress was communist dominated.

The leader of the Lebanese Socialist Progressive Party, Kemal Junblat, opened the congress. He said the Palestinian people's struggle for their homeland, and for the recovery of their national right, was linked with the overall liberal and progressive struggle of the Arab Liberation Movement.

Another early speaker was Kamal Nasser...spokesman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation..who said the reply to occupation and displacement is liberation through armed struggle. Later, during a break in the agenda, Kamal Nasser outlined the conferences aim to a reporter.
