  • Description

THOUSANDS OF PILGRIMS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) POURED INTO SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO, A SOUTH ITALIAN VILLAGE, TO PAY THEIR LAST RESPECTS TO PADRE PIO, A MONK WHO FOR 50 YEARS BORE STIGMATA ON HIS HANDS, FEET AND SIDE, SIMILAR TO THOSE OF CHRIST. PADRE PIO WHO WAS 81 DIED LAST FRIDAY (SEPTEMBER 20) AFTER SAYING MASS AT HIS MONASTERY ABOVE THE VILLAGE.

FOR MILLIONS OF CHRISTIANS, CATHOLICS AND NON-CATHOLICS, PADRE PIO WAS A SAINT. MANY THOUGHT HE COULD PERFORM MIRACLES, AND HAD THE GIFTS OF BIFOCATION (BEING IN TWO PLACES AT ONCE), AND LEVITATION (ABILITY TO RISE SPONTANEOUSLY OFF THE GROUND); SOME CLAIMED HE HAD HEALED THEM MIRACULOUSLY, AND TO OTHERS HE APPEARED RISING FROM THE ALTAR AS HE SAID MASS.

ORIGINALLY A CAPUCHIN MONK HE WAS RELEASED FROM HIS VOWS BY POPE PIUS THE TWELFTH. HE RECEIVED THE STIGMATA FIFTY YEARS AGO AFTER SAYING MASS AT HIS MONASTERY. THE CHURCH NEVER OFFICIALLY ACCEPTED OR REJECTED THE MIRACLE OF THE PADRE'S STIGMATA, BUT POPE PAUL SENT PADRE PIO A SPECIAL BLESSING ON THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APPEARANCE OF THE WOUNDS, AND PRAYED FOR HIS SOUL AFTER HE DIED.

TWO YEARS AGO THE CHURCH CARRIED AN OFFICIAL INQUIRY INTO HIS WOUNDS, BUT THE RESULTS WHERE NEVER MADE PUBLIC, DURING THE INQUIRY HE WAS FORBIDDEN TO SAY MASS. WITH THE MANY GIFTS HE RECEIVED OVER THE YEARS PADRE PIO FOUNDED A HOSPITAL IN FOGGIA AT A COST OF GBP1 MILLION STERLING.
