  • Description

The Commission of Inquiry set up in Ethiopia to investigate alleged abuses by former Government officials is scheduled to begin its work within the next two weeks.

This was revealed at a press conference on Friday (26 July) in Addis Ababa given by Commission Chairman, Professor Mesfin Woldemariam and his deputy, Major Mersha Admasu.

Preliminary investigations have already been completed. When the 15-man inquiry team begins its proceedings, sessions will, in the main, be open to the public.

Professor Woldemariam told newsmen that what was not clearly known was that the Commission had not been formed to pass judgment on any person, but to inquire into cases of unlawful enrichment and abuse of authority and to submit its findings to duly assigned courts of law for them to take appropriate action.

The Professor and Major Admasu indicated that the Commission's work would take about two years - perhaps longer.
