    THE WARTIME ALLIES RETURNED TO NORMANDY YESTERDAY (6 JUNE) TO MARK THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR ASSAULT OF HITLER'S EUROPEAN FORTRESS. IT WAS A DAY MAINLY FOR THE BRITISH AND CANADIAN FORCES JUST AS WEDNESDAY HAD BEEN FOR THE AMERICANS.

    MORE THAN 1,000 MEN OF THE THREE ARMED SERVICES TOOK PART IN THE COMMEMORATIONS. THEY LAID WREATHS AT THE BRITISH WAR CEMETERY AT RANVILLE AND AT PEGASUS BRIDGE AND AT BENEUVILLE, TO COMMEMORATE THE AIRBORNE TROOPS WHO SWOOPED DOWN ON THE VILLAGE A FEW HOURS BEFORE THE LANDING STARTED TO PREVENT THE GERMANS MOVING REINFORCEMENTS OVER THE BRIDGES TO THE BEACHES. THE CANADIANS ALSO HELD THEIR CEREMONIES, LAYING WREATHS AT THEIR MILITARY CEMETERY AT BENY SUR MER.

    THE DAY'S CEREMONIES CULMINATED IN A COLOURFUL MILITARY PARADE AT RIVA BELLA, A SEASIDE RESORT NEAR OUISTREHAM. DURING THE PARADE IN WHICH MORE THAN 2,000 SOLDIERS TOOK PART, A VINTAGE LANCASTER BOMBER AND TWO SPITFIRES FLEW LOW OVER THE ROOF TOPS OF THE SEASIDE HOMES.
