  • Description

A TIME BOMB EXPLODED IN A CROWDED CAFETERIA AT THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY IN JERUSALEM TODAY (THURSDAY) INJURING 22 PEOPLE - MOST OF THEM STUDENTS. THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED JUST BEFORE MIDDAY WHEN THERE WERE ABOUT 200 STUDENTS IN THE CAFETERIA.

IT WAS REPORTED FROM BEIRUT TODAY THAT THE POPULAR FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF PALESTINE HAD CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CAFETERIA EXPLOSION.

THE BOMB, WHICH WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN LEFT IN A BRIEFCASE ON A BENCH, SHATTERED ALL THE CAFETERIA WONDOWS, WRECKED FURNITURE AND SMASHED A GLASS-WALLED PASSAGEWAY. MOST OF THE INJURIES WERE SLIGHT CUTS CAUSED BY THE FLYING GLASS, AND NEARLY ALL THE INJURED WERE SENT HOME AFTER HOSPITAL TREATMENT.

IT WAS JERUSALEM'S SECOND MAJOR BOMB INCIDENT WITHIN TWO WEEKS. THE FIRST KILLED TWO STUDENTS AND INJURED 10 OTHER PEOPLE IN A CROWDED JERUSALEM SUPERMARKET ON FEBRUARY 21. SEVERAL ARAB SUSPECTS WERE ROUNDED UP BY POLICE AFTER TODAY'S EXPLOSION.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY, MR. A. HARMAN, AND THE EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT, MR. B. CHERRICK, ARRIVED TO INSPECT THE DAMAGE AS STUDENTS AND HELPERS BEGAN CLEARING THE WRECKED CAFE.
