  • Description

TOKYO -- WHERE WITH THE OPENING OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES ONLY FIVE WEEKS AWAY, PREPARATIONS ARE MOVING TOWARDS A FEVERISH CLIMAX. WITHIN THE LAST FEW DAYS TOW LARGE HOTELS HAVE OPENED -- ONE OF THEM RECKONED TO BE THE LARGEST IN THE ORIENT; WHILE YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) THE NATIONAL GYMNASIUM -- FEATURING THE LARGEST INDOOR SWIMMING POOL IN THE WORLD -- WAS OPENED.

THE NATIONAL GYMNASIUM, WITH ITS SPECTACULAR SUSPENSION ROOF WEIGHING SOME 2,000 TONS, HAS BECOME A TOKYO LANDMARK. DESIGNED BY KENZO TANGE, PROFESSOR AT TOKYO UNIVERSITY AND ONE OF JAPAN'S OUTSTANDING MODERN ARCHITECTS, IT HAS TAKEN THREE YEARS TO BUILD. IT'S SITED CLOSE TO THE NATIONAL STADIUM, WHERE THE OLYMPIC ATHLETICS WILL BE HELD, AND THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE.

THE NEW 17-STOREY TOKYO OHOTANI HOTEL HAS MORE THAN 1,100 ROOMS, WHILE THE OTHER NEW HOTEL -- THE TOKYO PRINCE -- HAS JUST OVER 500. BUT EVEN WITH THESE LATEST ADDITIONS TO IT'S TOURIST FACILITIES, TOKYO WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE HOTEL ACCOMMODATION FOR ALL THE 30,000 VISITORS EXPECTED DURING THE GAMES. AN ESTIMATED 10,000 WILL HAVE TO STAY IN PRIVATE HOUSES AND ON BOATS ANCHORED IN TOKYO HARBOUR.

AS AN ADDED FACILITY FOR VISITORS DURING THE GAMES SOME OF THE BIGGEST HOTELS HAVE OPENED SHOPS IN THEIR BASEMENTS WHERE THE GUESTS CAN BUY THE LATEST WESTERN CLOTHES AS WELL AS JAPANESE GARMENTS.
