  • Description

PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN OF PAKISTAN AND MR SHASTRI, THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MET IN KARACHI YESTERDAY (MONDAY) FOR THE FIRST TIME. MR SHASTRI WAS ON HIS WAY HOME AFTER ATTENDING THE NON-ALIGNED NATIONS CONFERENCE IN CAIRO.

IN A STATEMENT READ OUT TO REPORTERS AFTER INFORMAL TALKS BETWEEN THE TWO NATIONAL LEADERS, MR SHASTRI SAID THEY HAD A GENERAL DISCUSSION ON RELATIONS BETWEEN THEIR TWO COUNTRIES. BOTH FIRMLY BELIEVED THAT RELATIONS NEEDED TO BE IMPROVED AND CONDUCTED TO THEIR MUTUAL BENEFIT. DISCUSSIONS AT APPROPRIATE LEVELS WOULD BEGIN SHORTLY TO EXAMINE WAYS IN WHICH THESE IMPROVEMENTS COULD BE CARRIED OUT.

MR SHASTRI WAS GIVEN AN WARM WELCOME AT THE AIRPORT WHERE HIS AIRCRAFT LANDED FOR A FIVE-HOUR STOPOVER. THE PRESIDENT WAS THERE WITH SENIOR GOVERNMENT MINISTERS TO GREET THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, AND THEN TOOK HIM BACK TO THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE.

THE ARRIVAL OF MR SHASTRI CONFIRMS THAT HE IS CONTINUING THE CONCILIATORY POLICY TOWARDS PAKISTAN WHICH WAS INITIATED BY MR NEHRU, WITH PARTICULAR CONCERN OVER THE SETTLEMENT OF THE KASHMIR DISPUTE. THERE HAVE RECENTLY BEEN STRONG DEMANDS BY SECTIONS OF INDIA'S CONGRESS PARTY FOR THE ADOPTION OF A TOUGH LINE WITH PAKISTAN OVER KASHMIR -- BUT THIS, SO FAR, MR SHASTRI HAS RESISTED.
