Background: MR KHRUSHCHEV, PRESIDENT NASSER AND THE PRESIDENTS OF IRAQ AND THE YEMEN TODAY (THURSDAY) TOUCHED A BUTTON AT THE ASWAN HIGH DAM SITE -- AND BLASTED AWAY THE LAST BARRIER TO THE DIVERSION OF THE RIVER NILE.

YESTERDAY (SHOWN ON FILM) MR KHRUSHCHEV AND PRESIDENT NASSER CAST STONES INTO THE NILE IN A SYMBOLIC GESTURE MARKING THE COMPLETION OF THE FIRST STAGE OF THE RUSSIAN AIDED ASWAN HIGN DAM PROJECT.

STANDING SIDE BY SIDE, IN A RIVER BOAT, THE RUSSIAN AND EGYPTIAN LEADERS WERE CHEERED BY THOUSANDS OF WORKERS ON THE RIVER BANKS. THEY WERE ACCOMPANIED BY PRESIDENT SALLAL OF THE YEMEN.

THE CASTING OF STONES WAS A SIGNAL FOR THE START OF WORK ON CLOSING A GAP IN THE FLOW OF THE RIVER AT A POINT ABOUT FIVE MILES FROM THE DAM. IMMEDIATELY SCORES OF WAITING TRUCKS BEGAN DUMPING HUNDREDS OF TONS OF ROCK AND BOULDERS INTO THE GAP AT HIGH SPEED.

EARLIER THE TWO LEADERS WERE WILDLY CHEERED BY EGYPTIAN AND RUSSIAN WORKERS AS THEY TOURED THE GBP400 MILLION PROJECT.
