  • Description

Two visiting United States basketball teams met teams from The People's Republic of China in Peking's Capital Stadium on Tuesday (19 June).

The opening games in the tour for the men's collegiate all-star team and the John F. Kennedy Patriettes women's team came after a warm welcome by Chinese leaders.

In the women's match, the Patriettes were defeated 79 - 63 by a team from Chinese Physical Culture Institute. The United States women, current champions of the U.S. Amateur Athletic Union, were unable to overcome a close man-to-man defence by the Chinese. The U.S. Players fed the ball to their six foot two inch (two metres) centre, Barbara Wischmeier -- the games top scorer with 23 points.

But Li Mu-Chen, top scorer for the Chinese team, scored 21 points from out-side the American defence.

In the men's match, the speedy U.S. team used their taller forwards to advantage to defeat the Institute's combined team 88 - 59.

Outstanding player for the Institute team was Chang ta-Wei, who scored 12 points.

Following the tow matches, the two teams ran two laps of the court arm-in-arm and exchanged autographed basketballs.

The matches, telecast in Peking, was attended by Mr. David Bruce, bead of the new United States liaison office in Peking, making his first public appearance since arriving to take up his post a month ago. He sat with Chiang Ching, wife of Chinese leader Chairman Mao tse-Tung.

Capital Stadium, where the matches were played after the welcoming ceremony, was the site of the famous ping-pong matches between Chinese and U.S. teams which heralded the thawing of relations between the two countries.
