  • Description

The Shah of Iran is under a death sentence. It has been passed by Iran's Central Revolutionary Court. The head of the court, Ayatollah Khalkhali announced on Sunday (13 May) the death sentence on the Shah and most of his family. The Shah is an exile in the Bahamas, and Ayatollah Khalkhali said that anyone who assassinated him would simply be obeying Iran's revolutionary courts.

SYNOPSIS: For a penny a shot, Iranians can carry out the execution. At least on paper, for that's how much people pay to fire at pictures of the Shah. The death sentence hasn't surprised the Iranians, some even think it just, but most Western nations have called it crime against humanity.

When he announced the death sentence, Ayatollah Khalkhali defended the court's findings -- and the sentences already passed against the Shah's former supporters. He said western ideas of justice had no place in Islamic court.s Khalkhali compared the Revolutionary court to the Nuremberg Trails, where Nazi War-criminals were tried after World War Two.

But Iran's religious leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, has laid down new and different guidelines on the death penalty. According to the official news agency he says that only murderers, torturers and those who ordered massacres should face the death sentence, in the Revolutionary Court.

February's Islamic Revolution has left Iran in economic turmoil. the country is suffering from chronic unemployment. But Khomeini has come up with one way to provide his countrymen with work - he commissioned a motorway to be built from the capital Teheran to Qom.

Part of the motorway is finished but there are no cars. Iran struggles to combine prosperity with Islamic principles.
