    THE NATIONAL UNION OF SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENTS HAS PROTESTED TO THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE, MR VORSTER, OVER THE DETENTION FOR NINETY DAYS OF STUDENTS AND LECTURES SUSPECTED OF BEING "ENEMIES OF THE STATE".

    THE STUDENTS SENT THEIR STRONGLY WORDED NOTE AFTER PROTEST MEETINGS YESTERDAY (AUGUST 18) IN DURBAN AND JOHANNESBURG.

    THEY ARE PARTICULARLY ANGRY ABOUT THE ARREST AND DETENTION OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENTS, MR JONTY DRIVER.

    THE STUDENT'S UNION VEHEMENTLY OPPOSES THE GOVERNMENT'S APARTHEID POLICY OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION.

    AT THE PROTEST MEETING AT WITWATERSRAND UNIVERSITY, JOHANNESBURG, THE STUDENTS PASSED A MOTION CONDEMNING THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE ACTION AGAINST STUDENTS AND LECTURERS.

    THE MEETING WAS HELD IN THE UNIVERSITY'S GREAT HALL, WHICH WAS FILLED BY THE STUDENTS. THE ROWDIEST STUDENTS WERE THOSE WHO SUPPORTED THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT'S POLICIES.

    THE PROTEST MEETING HAD BEEN ORGANISED AFTER STUDENTS REQUESTING IT HAD COLLECTED FIVE-HUNDRED SIGNATURES ON A PETITION.
