  • Description

THE ARMOURY OF THE HOTEL NATIONAL DES INVALIDES, ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND HISTORIC BUILDINGS IN FRANCE: AN ANCIENT SETTING FOR A VERY MODERN FASHION SHOW - GUY LAROCHE'S 1965 SPRING AND SUMMER COLLECTION...CREATIONS FROM LAROCHE ARE FAR REMOVED FROM MUSEUM PIECES; HIS MODELS MIGHT BE STATUESQUE - BUT THEY'RE CERTAINLY NOT STATUES.

THIS YEAR LAROCHE GOES AGAINST THE TRENDS SET BY OTHER DESIGNERS.IN PARTICULAR, HIS SKIRTS ARE NARROW, OFTEN WRAP-AROUND.GENERALLY HIS DESIGNS ARE STRAIGHT AND GEOMETRICAL IN CONCEPTION...ONE GLANCE AT A LAROCHE CREATION AND THE WORD 'CLASSICAL' IMMEDIATELY COMES TO MIND.

NO STRONG COLOURS - PASTEL SHADES ARE VERY MUCH FAVOURED BY THIS TOP DESIGNER WHO ALWAYS MANAGES TO HIT JUST THE RIGHT NOTE OF POPULARITY.WHITE, BEIGE, LIGHT BROWN, OR PERHAPS SHRIMP OR EVEN RASPBERRY PINK....THE COLLECTION'S FLAVOUR CAN ALSO BE DETECTED IN HIS CHOICE OF MATERIALS - SHANTUNG, GABARDINE, CREPE, TARTAN TAFFETA AND FINE TWEEDS.

FOLLOWING BEHIND, AIDA WITH ANOTHER COCKTAIL DRESS, THIS TIME IN NAVY BLUE VIOLET WITH FLOUNCES.IT'S WORN WITH A VOILE CAPE, WITH THE NECKLINE EDGED WITH VELVET.

NEXT A SHAWL DRESS IN HOUNDSTOOTH NAVY BLUE AND WHITE WOOL.THE WHOLE EFFECT IS SET OFF WITH A NATURAL COLOURED STRAW HAT.IT'S MODELLED BY VIRGINIE.

SET AGAINST A PARADE OF VINTAGE PERIOD UNIFORMS, CATHERINE WEARS ANOTHER DRESS FOR COCKTAIL IN FLOUNCED BLACK LACE WITH A BLACK STRAW JACKET, TOPPED WITH A BLACK LACE ROSE IN HER HAIR.....NEXT IN LINE, AND SEEN IN THE SAME SHOT, AIDA AGAIN, THIS TIME WEARING A SHAWL DRESS IN PRINTED GREEN AND BEIGE SILK CREPE....THE LARGE NATURAL STRAW 'UMBRELLA' HAT IS ALSO A STUNNER!
FINALLY IN THIS PARADE OF FASHION, AIDA WEARS A VERY BECOMING BLACK AND WHITE SUIT, WITH A CUTE BLACK STRAW HAT.

(WORK FIRST BEGAN ON THE HOTEL NATIONAL DES INVALIDES IN 1671 AT THE REQUEST OF LOUIS XIV.IT TOOK FIVE YEARS TO BUILD.IN 1841, NAPOLEON'S ASHES WERE BROUGHT BACK TO FRANCE AND PLACED IN A SPECIALLY DESIGNED TOMB WHICH STANDS UNDER THE DOME OF THE INVALIDES.IT IS FOR THIS THAT THE BUILDING IS MOST FAMOUS.APART FROM BEING A SHRINE, THE BUILDING ALSO HOUSES THE ARMY AND THE PARIS MILITARY MUSEUMS, AND THE OFFICES OF AN ORGANISATION DEVOTED TO THE WELFARE OF WAR VETERANS.SEVENTEEN ROOMS SURROUND THE FAMOUS COURTYARD WITH ITS STATUE OF NAPOLEON.MANY IMPORTANT AND HISTORIC MILITARY CEREMONIES HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE COURTYARD....IT WAS HERE THAT GENERAL EISENHOWER AND THE LATE SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL WERE DECORATED WITH THE MEDAILLE MILITAIRE.THE MUSEUM'S ARMOURY CONTAINS PERSONAL ARMOUR BY MANY FRENCH KINGS.
