The 11th regional conference of the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation has been meeting in Kuwait. More than twenty nations -mostly Arab and African countries - have sent delegates.
During the conference, Mr. A. Boerma, Director General of the Fao, said developing countries must double their agricultural production to avert serious problems in the future.
In 1971 agricultural production actually fall below the rate of population growth in many countries. Mr. Boerma said FAO's know-how could be of great benefit in drawing up programmes for improving agriculture.
The Deputy Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed, said in his inaugural speech that the world had been responsible for the outburst of the Palestinian people, which - he said - followed 25 years of injustice. Mr. Hammoud Yousuf al-Nusf, Kuwait's minister of public works and agriculture, was elected chairman of the conference.
SYNOPSIS: The Deputy-Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber Al-Asmad, attended the eleventh regional conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, which was held in Kuwait. He was welcomed by the organisation's Director-General, Mr. Boerma.
Delegates attended the conference from over twenty countries, mostly Arab and African states. In addition several of Kuwait's ministers and top government officials were there.
The Director-General told delegates that developing countries must at least double their agricultural production to avoid serious trouble in the future. He said production in many developing nations fall heavily last year, even dropping below the rate of population growth.
The Deputy-Amir, in his inaugural speech, praised the organisation for the part it had played in providing food to millions of people. He said the rich nations should help smaller counties but at the moment they devoted their attentions moment they devoted their attentions to producing weapons of destructions.
Mr. Hammoud Al-Nisf, who led the Kuwait delegation, then welcomed the participants. He was elected chairman.
The delegates also heard several attacks on world powers for their attitude to the Palestine question. Sheikh Al-Ahmed, for example, said the world was responsible for the Palestinian outbursts which - he said - resulted from 25 years of oppression.
