  • Description

British troops sent to Uganda to deal with the Army mutiny in January yesterday (Monday) started returning to their Kenya base. The move follows talks last week in Kampala between the Uganda Prime Minister, Dr. Milton Obote, and Britain's Commonwealth Secretary, Mr. Duncan Sandys.

650 British Marines stationed in Tanganyika as a "police force" will be withdrawn by the end of this month. And with the local Army disbanded following the mutiny, replacements will be made with "a battalion from another African country." The official statement announcing this did not specify which African country.

Kenya will have all British troops withdrawn before December 12.
