  • Description

Four guerillas who hijacked a ferry boat with three hostages to touch off an eight-day drama in Singapore's harbour left the country one early Friday (8 February) morning for Kuwait aboard a Japan Airlines aircraft carrying more than 20 Japanese and Singapore officials.

The guerillas' safe conduct out of Singapore after their abortive bid to blow up an oil refinery last Thursday (31 January) was negotiated following the seizure of the Japanese Embassy in Kuwait by Arab commandos. The commandos threatened to kill the Japanese Ambassador and his staff if the four guerillas were not permitted to leave Singapore on a Japanese aircraft.

Following a day of tense negotiations during which Japanese Ambassador Tokichiro Jomoto met for three hours with Singapore Prime Minister Les Kwan Yew, the guerillas were suddenly whisked from the ferry-boat in the harbour to singapore airport and a waiting JAL DC-8 aircraft.

The guerillas -- two Japanese and two Arabs -- claim to be members of the Japanese Red Army and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). They released their three Singaporean hostages near the airport VIP lounge before getting on board the aircraft for take-off for Kuwait.

With them went at least two Singapore officials who were involved in the negotiations with the guerillas, and more than 20 Japanese officials. Three of the Japanese officials were believed to be from the foreign Ministry in Tokyo.
