  • Description

South Vietnam's Foreign Minister, Tran van Lam, who arrived in France on Monday (January 22) hoping to join the Vietnam peace talks in Paris when they resumed, told reporters at the airport that his presence indicated his Government's goodwill.

He was hoping to co-operate directly in the talks between the North Vietnamese, Viet Cong and United States negotiators, he said.

SYNOPSIS: Moves to resume the suspended Vietnam peace talks continued in Paris, France, on Monday, between North Vietnamese, United States, and Viet Cong negotiators. Hoping to join the talks at some stage was South Vietnam, who sent along its Foreign Minister, Tran van Lam.

The Minister told reporters, in fluent French, that he wasn't able to say much as he was not in touch with events in Paris. He didn't want to deceive them with speculation, he said, and would rather reserve comment until afterwards.

But he did say he had come to Paris to show the goodwill of the South Vietnamese Government for the re-establishment of peace in Vietnam. He was also going to explore the possibilities of joining the negotiations and bring direct South Vietnamese co-operation in order to complete them successfully, he said.

The day before his arrival, Viet Cong negotiator Madame Binh said ALL interested parties would have to sign any peace accord. When the question of signing was put to Tran van Lam, he laughed.....and indicated he was not there to do so.
