An urgent operation in Greece to save the ancient temple of the Acropolis has got under way. The importance of the rescue work was emphasised when, a few weeks ago, part of a frieze fell to the ground and shattered.
SYNOPSIS: Increasingly this century the Acropolis has been threatened by pollution from cars and factories which is eating away at the marble.
At the Temple of Errechtheum, experts are beginning the removal of statues which have already been damaged. They'll be stored in a safe place and substituted with plastic replicas. Already some of the classical ornaments at the Parthenon have been removed to prevent their complete destruction by pollution. The operation is being conducted jointly by the Greek Ministry of Science and Industry and UNESCO.
