  • Description

EXTRA WORKERS ARE BEING BROUGHT IN TO SPEED UP CONSTRUCTION OF THE ZAMBIAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WHICH IS BEING BUILT 14 MILES FROM LUSAKA. THE ORIGINAL OPERATING DATE WAS MARCH NEXT YEAR, BUT AS A RESULT OF NEIGHBOURING RHODESIA'S DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, IT'S HOPED TO BRING THE NEW AIRPORT INTO USE LATER THIS YEAR.

COSTING ABOUT GBP6,000,000 STERLING, THE NEW AIRPORT WILL BE ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST MODERN IN AFRICA. IT WILL BE ABLE TO CATER FOR SURROUNDING COUNTRIES AS WELL AS ZAMBIA AND IS INTENDED TO BREAK THE PRESENT DEPENDENCE OF CENTRAL AFRICAN COUNTRIES ON THE AIRPORT AT SALISBURY.

THE 13,000 FOOT RUNAWAY WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE THE BIGGEST PLANES FLYING AND CAN BE EXTENDED FOR SUPERSONIC AIRLINERS. IT WILL HAVE "APRON" PARKING FOR SIX OF THE LARGEST INTERNATIONAL AIRLINERS AND SIX PLANES USED ON DOMESTIC SERVICES. PROBLEMS OF CONSTRUCTION SO FAR HAVE INCLUDED THE NEED FOR DRAINAGE DUE TO ZAMBIA'S RAINY SEASON.
