  • Description

Economy is the feature of most cars at Switzerland's Geneva Motor show, the first major european show for 1976, which opens on Thursday (11 March).

More than 20 new models are appearing on public display for the first time, amongst a total of 86 makes -- eight more than last year -- from 14 countries.

BMW, who announced before the show they were concentrating on fuel economy, are presenting a new version of their three litre coupe, the 633 CSi.

Lancia are revealing their new Gamma, a luxurious sedan, and Ford are showing their latest economy car, the Ghia city car, in Europe for the first time.

The Fiat Abarth 131 Rally car is new and Volvo is giving a premier showing to their new 343 for the first time.

France, Britain and Japan are also strongly represented at the show.

The first major European motor show for 1976, Switzerland's Geneva Motor show, opened on Thursday and the feature of most cars on view was economy. There were more than 20 new models from the 86 manufacturers represented at the show.

BMW - who along with another West German maker Opel, announced before the show they were concentrating more on economy - had its new three-litre 633 CSi on display. It was the car's first world presentation.

lancia's new luxury sedan, the Gamma Berlina also had its first world showing along with this sporty coupe. The coupe was the work of top Italian designer, Pininfarina.

Ford are also making a thrust at the economy car market with this little city runabout, appropriately named the Urban Car, designed by Ghia of Italy. It is a two-door four seater. It's been shown in the United Stated before but this is the first time Europeans have seen it.

Fiat have always produced excellent sporty cars, and this Abarth rally car continues the tradition.

This Volvo 343 having its first showing is a result of the recent takeover of the Dutch Daf company by Volvo. It is built in Holland.

The high price tag is for this British made Panther Rio, and old-style replica with plenty of power under that bonnet provided by an American V8. And making a re-appearance after a two-year absence from motor shows is the British Aston Martin. The company has just been re-formed.
