  • Description

PRINCE PHILIP, HUSBAND OF BRITAIN'S QUEEN ELIZABETH ARRIVED AT RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) FOR A VISIT AS THE QUEST OF KING FEISAL. AT THE AIRPORT HE WAS GREETED BY THE KING'S BROTHER, PRINCE KHALID, THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER.

A CROWD OF 300 WAS AT THE AIRPORT: THEY INCLUDED THE FAMILIES OF BRITISH AND AMERICAN TECHNICIANS WORKING FOR OIL COMPANIES IN THE COUNTRY, TRIBAL DIGNITARIES AND MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT. THERE, TOO, WAS BRIGADIER TIMBRELL, OF THE BRITISH MILITARY MISSION, WHICH IS HELPING IN THE ORGANISATION AND TRAINING OF THE KING'S BEDOUIN ARMY. BEFORE THE PRINCE'S AIRCRAFT LANDED, THE HOUR FOR PRAYER CAME AND THE GUARD LAID DOWN THEIR ARMS AND KNELT TOGETHER TOWARDS MECCA.

DURING HIS STAY PRINCE PHILIP WILL STAY AT THE ROYAL GUEST PALACE WHICH HAS BEEN SPECIALLY DECORATED AND REFURNISHED. THE PRINCE IS EXPECTED TO DINE WITH THE KING, VISIT THE ROYAL STABLES AND SEE THE KING'S FALCONS.

THE VISIT COMES AT A TIME WHEN BRITAIN'S POPULARITY IN SAUDI ARABIA IS HIGH. THE GOOD RELATIONS DATE FROM THE TIME BRITAIN RECOGNISED THE YEMENI ROYALIST GOVERNMENT. THE DISPUTE OVER THE BURAIMI OASIS, NOW BEING HANDLED BY THE U.N. SECRETARY-GENERAL, HAS PREVIOUSLY KEPT THE TWO COUNTRIES DIPLOMATICALLY APART.

PRINCE PHILIP WAS IN SAUDI ARABIA 15 YEARS AGO WHEN HE WAS A SERVING OFFICER IN THE ROYAL NAVY.
