Background: King Hussein of Jordan paid tribute to the work of his country's teachers over the last year during a ceremony in Amman on Thursday (March 6).

The ceremony was to mark Teacher's Day ... an annual event which is catching on in a number of other Arab nations. The King honoured 173 living and dead teachers with awards for their work in all fields of education.

He told the guests that they had a difficult job during difficult times, but no nations could progress unless its next generation was well educated. He praised the work done by Jordan's teachers and said that results gained by the nation's students last year showed the dedication they applied to their profession.
