  • Description

Police and troops tightened their hold tonight (Sunday) on the riot-stricken city of Belfast following last night's violent clashes during which five people were shot dead and a further 200 injured.

British troop reinforcements have been pouring into Northern Ireland during the day, and army headquarters, in a get-tough policy, threatened that any civilians carrying firearms were liable to be shot without warning.

Prime Minister Chichester-Clark, in a special television address, urged Protestants and Catholics to cease the feuding which flared up again yesterday (Saturday)following the imprisonment of Miss Bernadette Devlin for her p]art in the Londonderry rioting last year.

The British Government today ordered in 350 extra troops to bolster the peace-keeping force of British troops in Northern Ireland to 7,500 men. At the same time, the Defence Minister announced acceleration of a plan to send in a further 300 soldiers during July.

Tonight, clashes continued between rioters and troops despite the fact that public houses closed at 7 p.m., two hours earlier than usual.

Mr Chichester-Clark, in his television speech, said that there were clear signs that the riots last night had been deliberately prepared beforehand by people who wished to destroy Northern Ireland:-
