  • Description

1952 saw the discovery of major phosphate deposits in Togo. It is estimated that there are 50,000,000 tons of the ore still unexploited in the country. Phosphate has become Togo's principal export, and the mining and processing of the ore have given a tremendous boost to the level of the economy and employment in that country.

VISNEWS cameraman Bill Woodman visited one of the larger phosphate open quarries, near Hahotoe. Run by the Compagnie Togolese des Mines du Benin(CTMB), this quarry moves 70,000 metric tons of earth each day -- 12,000 tons of it being phosphate ore. A new extension, recently under-taken by the CTMB, promises to boost annual production of processed phosphate to nearly 2 1/2 million tons.
