  • Description

Power shortages, provoked by excessive use of air conditioning and by generator failures, threatened New York City as a sweltering heat wave continued on Tuesday (28 July).

One of the city's nuclear power generators -- "Big Alice" has broken down and power was diverted from other States to meet the New York demand. Consolidated Edison, the New York City power supply company, reduced voltages by three percent during the afternoon and major consumers were asked to shut off air conditioning plants, lights and lifts to conserve electricity. The City's subway train system ran a restricted service for part of the day. Another problem was eyesmarting air pollution caused by sunlight acting on car exhaust fumes which reached unsatisfactory levels during the day.

As the crisis continued, officials at the power authority and New York citizens were hoping that the five-day-old heat wave would end to avert further electricity cuts.
