  • Description

THE PEOPLE OF THE CENTRAL ITALIAN VILLAGE OF COCULLO CARRY LIVE SNAKES IN THEIR ANNUAL FESTIVAL IN HONOUR OF THEIR PATRON SAINT, SAN DOMENICO. DOZENS OF WRITHING REPTILES TOOK PART IN THE FESTIVAL YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

THE VILLAGERS GO INTO THE ABRUZZI MOUNTAINS IN THEIR SEARCH FOR THE SNAKES. ONLY A FEW ARE VENOMOUS -- MOST ARE HARMLESS GRASS-SNAKES.

THE REPTILES ARE KEPT IN EARTHEN JARS FILLED WITH CRUSHED WHEAT UNTIL THE DAY OF THE PROCESSION.

CENTURIES AGO SAN DOMENICO IS SAID TO HAVE RID THE AREA OF A PLAQUE OF VENOMOUS SNAKES. THE SNAKES COLLECTED FOR THE FESTIVAL SYMBOLISE THE EVIL OF TEMPTATION.

A STATUE OF THE SAINT IS DRAPED WITH THE ANIMALS AND CARRIED THROUGH THE STREETS DURING THE PROCESSION. THE MOST ADEPT SNAKE CATCHERS -- CALLED "SEPARI" -- ALSO CARRY THEM BESIDE THE STATUE.

MOST OF THE VILLAGERS HAVE BECOME SO EXPERT AT THE ART OF SNAKE-CATCHING THAT THERE ARE RARELY ANY BITES. THE LAST FATALITY FROM SNAKE-BITE WAS YEARS AGO.

HELD EACH YEAR ON THE FIRST THURSDAY IN MAY, THE FESTIVAL ATTRACTS TOURISTS AND SIGHTSEERS FROM ITALY AND ABROAD.
