    BRAZIL'S REVOLUTIONARY REGIME EXPELLED 40 MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ON FRIDAY (10TH APRIL), ON GROUPS OF PRO-COMMUNIST AND OTHER SO-CALLED EXTREMIST ACTIVITIES ENDANGERING THE STATE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE MILITARY-CONTROLLED REGIME SUSPENDED THE POLITICAL RIGHTS OF 60 OTHER PROMINENT BRAZILIANS FOR A PERIOD OF 10 YEARS.

    THIS CRACK-DOWN IS THE FIRST ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY THE AUTHORITIES SINCE PASSING THE INSTITUTIONAL ACT WHICH WILL GUIDE BRAZIL UNTIL THE END OF JANUARY 1966. THE ACT IS A BASIC SET OF RULES AIMED AT WEEDING OUT THE ANTI-GOVERNMENT ELEMENTS AND OTHER EXTREMIST, AND SETTING THE ECONOMY ON THE RECOVERY PATH. IT GIVES THE PRESIDENT VIRTUAL DICTATOR POWERS.
