Background: In their first official engagement since their marriage on November 14, Britain's princess Anne and her husband, Captain Mark Phillips, spent four days in Ecuador from December 4 to 8.

They arrived in Quito on December 4 in an Andover of the Queen's flight which had flown them from the Island of Baltra in the Galapagos chain. They'd ended their honeymoon cruise in the Royal Yacht Britannia at Baltra.

In Ecuador, the couple saw celebrations for the 439th anniversary of the founding of the capital, Quito, spent two days in the Andes countryside around Quito and ate at a local restaurant as well as facing the customary round of receptions and official dinner parties.

They were greeted on their arrival at Quito's Marshall Sucre Airport by Ecuador's Foreign Minister, Sr. Antonia Jose Lucio Paredes, his wife; the British Ambassador Mr. Peter Mennel and his wife and the Canadian Ambassador Mr. Sidney Fairfield.

In addition, some two thousand people including many members of the city's thousand strong British community, packed the public galleries of the airport for the arrival.

On the second day of their tour, they visited the Andean Indian village of Saquisili, 80 kilometres from Quito, where they were able to see local goods for sale in the village market.

At the opposite end of the social scale, they met Ecuador's President Guillermo Rodriguez Lara and his colonial style Palace.
